About Us

The Department of Life Science at Ramnarain Ruia Autonomous College was established in 1977 by the visionary Professor (Dr.) A.R. Kulkarni. Our department is dedicated to the comprehensive study of various facets of Life science including Plant Physiology, Animal Physiology, Developmental Biology, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Neuroscience, Genetics and Genetic Engineering, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, and more. We offer BSc, MSc (specialising in Biotechnology), and PhD programs in Life Science, fostering a robust academic and research environment.

Our well-equipped laboratories feature advanced instruments such as a Gel Documentation System, PCR Thermocycler, Fluorescence Microscope, Trinocular Microscope, Inverted Microscope, and UV-Vis Spectrophotometer. With a curriculum that aligns with competitive exams like CSIR NET Life Science, our department is committed to academic excellence, strong faculty expertise, and offering extensive research and internship opportunities.

Our achievements include:
  • ‘Highly Rated Department’ under the College of Excellence, 2012.
  • ‘Star Status’ by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, 2014.
  • Under the Academic and Industrial collaboration with Reliance Industries for three years on “Characterization of algae as an alternative source of fuel.” The grants for the same were 93 lakhs for 3 years. (2012-2015)
  • UGC Minor grant of 4.9 lakhs, for 2 years on the topic ‘Biochemical and Pharmacognostic evaluation of Piper betel (Linn)(betel) leaves.’ (2015-17).
  • Mumbai University Minor Research Grants for 2 projects for 1 year each (2010-11), on topics ‘Effect of acid rain on crop varieties’ (Rs 35000 /-) and ‘Extraction, Characterization and Stability Studies of plant extracts and their application as Natural Dyes.’.(Rs 29,000/-)
  • The total number of publications in reputed International and National Journals have been 30.
  • Our students have participated in Avishkar Research Convention and reached University level.
  • Our students have been involved as assistants to projects under United Nations Development Program on Study of Dolphins on Konkan Coast (UNDP)

Activities of the Department

Synapse’ the department festival has been organised every year since 2005. Here students showcase their creativity and interests in the subject by making working live models, 3D projects, designing unique games, quizzes, bio rangoli competition, artifacts like bookmarks and keychains and catering delicious delicacies at food stalls. They also structure the theme for the festival and design decorations, logo, badges, T-shirts and brochures.
Experts from various fields are invited to deliver lectures and share their experiences. We have had such talks by Dr. Vijay Shastri, Director-Technical, MurliKrishna Pharma Private limited and Dr. Sanjeev Waghmare, Scientific Officer “E, ACTREC to name a few.
Engaging visits are also organised as per the curriculum design which helps students to gain real-world experience as they learn parallel to theory. Topics like fermentation technology are clubbed with a visit to Sula Vineyards, Drug designing with a visit to pharmaceutical company, advanced instrumentation with a visit to institutes like NIRRH, Biodiversity field visits to Sasan Gir, Ranthambore national park, Jim Corbett national park, Rann of Kutch, SGNP and Saguna baug have been organised. During the Citizen Science course students had camera trapped nocturnal movements of leopard  and wild boar at the Phansad wildlife sanctuary.
This year we celebrated themed days to create fun moments along with studying. This helps students to develop not only IQ but their EQ and SQ levels. Together, these activities help in creating a lively learning environment for the students.
