About Us

Ramnarain Ruia college was established in 1937. Chemistry department of the college was established along with the inception of the college. It is one of the oldest and has been the biggest department of the college. It was also one of the first few departments to start postgraduate courses as early as 1950, in the first decade of the establishment of the college. It is the first department of the college to start doctoral degree courses with research in Organic Chemistry. Dr. Bhave being the pioneer in the field. Since then research has always been forte of the Department of Chemistry. Department was always fortunate to get research guides in the field of Organic and Analytical Chemistry who carved a niche for themselves.Department of Chemistry had always been at the forefront in the running of the regular academic programmes and always eager to execute a new discipline like PG course in Analytical Chemistry in 1973, and activity like conducting Refresher Courses for teachers on behalf of the Academic Staff College in the last decade of the last century or may be an activity like conducting Intercollegiate Students Festival with competitions like presentation of a topic , Chemquiz that provided platform to the students to exhibit their prowess in the subject and compete with others for now almost a quarter of a century starting from late nineties. Holding of workshops and seminars for teachers and students has been a routine feature of the department .The department being the largest ,always had a major share of all the grants that the college received like through UGC the five year plan or special grants like the STAR college grant from Dept of Biotechnology or the grants for the college being chosen as the college with Potential for Excellence or college with Excellence. All these grants have helped the department in equipping it with the state of the art instruments from time to time. P S Ramanathan Instrumentation Centre has been a unique feature of the department. Established in 2011 it boosts of all high end use instruments like GC, GC-MS, HPTLC, HPLC, AAS, DSC and FTIR, The centre has been training teachers and students on the instruments carrying out research projects of the students and the scholars and doing analysis for the industry. With the advent of the ICT the department has prepared several online teaching programmes. Use of computer technology has been effectively done in the preparation of videos making students aware of the aspects like lab safety and teaching of different practical techniques. The department has provided fourPrincipals to the College,a large number to other colleges as Principal in the city of Mumbai and a Vice Chancellor to the University of Mumbai.

Career opportunities within science and technology are seeing unprecedented growth across the world, and so those who study chemistry are seeing their career prospects, develop right before their eyes. Chemistry involves study of all things- chemical processes, chemical compositions and chemical manipulation- in order to better understand the way in which materials are structured, how they react and how they change. Having gained chemical understanding at molecular level, chemistry graduates may choose to apply this knowledge in almost unlimited way, as it can be used to analyze all matter and therefore our environment.

Chemistry graduates have much scope to use their knowledge within a range of research sectors, including roles within chemical engineering, chemical and related industries, healthcare and more. Research careers are more diverse than they might first appear. One could be based in a university combining research with teaching in a pharmaceutical company, working on developing and trialing new drugs or in a public sector research centre. Some examples of the diverse research done by chemistry experts include discovery of new medicines and vaccines, forensic analysis for criminal cases, improving understanding of environmental issues and development of new chemical products and materials such as cosmetics, paints, plastics, food and drink. Closely related to the healthcare industry, the pharmaceutical sector, polymer industry, Cement and ceramic industry, agriculture, medicinal plant chemistry ( Phytochemistry), nanomaterials, petroleum industry are huge in their own rights, offering a correspondingly large employment market. Toxicology is another fast growing field for careers in chemistry. Interdisciplinary nexus can be built with Chemistry as it is the fundamental subject . There are a growing number of government funded careers in chemistry within areas such as law, policy, defense, public health and the environment.

Activities of the Department

I ) A.P.Rao Memorial Lecture: Prof.A.P.Rao ,a life member of the Shishkan Prasarak Mandali, an alumnus of Ruia college, faculty of Chemistry department , Head of Chemistry Department ,  was Vice Principal for two decades and he retired as Principal of the College. He was a born teacher devoted to the subject and to his students. He was friend, philosopher and guide for many of his students and shaped many careers. Students revered him.On the occasion of his 75 th birth anniversary ,in 2007 Principal A.P.Rao Foundation was established by his students friends and well wishers .Every year on his birthday ie 5 th September a Memorial Lecture is arranged by Department of Chemistry in subjects like sports , music and Chemistry in which he was interested. In addition, first rankers in the subject of Chemistry from F.Y. to M.Sc. are awarded cash prizes and a helping hand to a needy student from the graduate and PG students of Chemistry. For last 13 years eminent personalities have delivered Prof.A.P.Rao memorial lectures ,on topics in diverse fields from Philosophy to Sports

II) Chem Fest Any subject can be made more relevant to someone, when it's concepts are correlated with day to day situations with an element of fun to it. With this in mind,  Department of Chemistry, , organizes a two day annual inter-collegiate event , “React-ChemFest “ under the  aegis of Samanvaya . Many activities like Chem-Quiz, Chem Housie , Situation Resolution, Chem Relay which involve small experiments,  are organized by the UG and PG students of the department under the guidance of the faculty. Stall activities like Nitro-Tapri, which encourage entrepreneur skills in the students. This fest receives an overwhelming response from colleges all over Mumbai and is a classic example of an event which is , " Of The Students, For The Students & By The Students"
