10th & 11th January 2020, Two-day Interdisciplinary National Seminar organized by the Department of History
A two-day interdisciplinary national seminar, organized by the Department of History, Ramnarain Ruia Autonomous College, Mumbai, was held on 10th and 11th January 2020 at the College. The main objective of the seminar was to engage substantial deliberations on the subaltern movements in India in a historical perspective. Hence, the seminar was entitled ‘Subaltern Movements in India: Issues and Challenges’. Withstanding the focus on the micro-histories of subaltern that nevertheless retains larger frameworks of caste, class and gender (to name a few), the seminar received research papers that provided varied insights into the collection, analysis and production of the narratives of all possible subaltern categories from Indian past, present and future. As the seminar endeavoured to endorse and critique the prevailing state of subaltern studies with reference to other major streams, we received papers based on the themes that included identities and movements on the issues of gender, caste, region, and class. Papers in the subthemes categories were: Women’s’ Movement in India, Dalit Movement in India, Tribal Movement in India, Labour Movement in India, Peasant Movement in India, and Evolution of Subaltern Studies: Milestones and Critique.

S. P. Mandali’sRamnarainRuia Autonomous College with Ruia Students’ Council and Ruia NSS and NCC Unit (Girls and Boys) in association with Ruia College Alumni Association organized the Dream Run – 5K Half Marathon on 8 December 2019. This particular marathon was Ruia College’s initiative to encourage fitness amongst students, teaching as well as non teaching staff, and the Alumni. All the proceeds from this marathon are to go for mental health awareness. One of the most budding issues, the importance of mental health isn’t as understood as it should be and we, at Ruia College, were determined to do our part to contribute towards it.This marathon is a pre-event to our fest, Aarohan 2019 which will be held from 22 to 24 December 2019. The marathon experienced an entire spectrum of participants, covering all ages throughout. We had participants of all ages varying from 15 to over 70. It was amazing to see the enthusiasm and zeal in the participants. It just goes on to prove that fitness and age, they have no limits. Our second marathon of the year, the prizes were divided into the given categories – Ruiaites, Non Ruiaites, Teaching and non-Teaching staff, Girls and Alumni. All the top three finishers were awarded with medals, certificates andcashprizessponsored by Ruia College Alumni Association. It started by 6:30 AM where our quadrangle was filled with registrations and participants, with all the participants at the starting line outside of the college gate at 7:30AM. We also had Maharashtra Times with us covering the event for us, along with Himalaya Face Wash having their pop-up in our Quadrangle.Ofcourse, none of this would have been possible without the chairperson of RSC, Dr. PradeepWaghmare, our esteemed Principal, Dr. AnushreeLokur, the chairperson of RCAA, Dr. Sathe and the headsof NSS and NCC Units (Girls and Boys). We hope to continue organizing marathons in the forthcoming years, as an ode to the Fit India Movement.

January 08, 2019 - Discussion Forum 'Dear Zindagi'
On 8th January, 2019(Tuesday) a discussion forum was conducted entitled ‘Dear Zindagi’ by Mr. Dayashankar Mishra (Blogger) and the Head of digital media (ZEE NEWS) by the Ruia Science Association(RSA) and the Gender Sensitization Cell.
People have started to become more selfish and restricted to themselves that they are no more sociable and are slowly approaching a phase of depression. He discussed about the causes of depression and how much our minds get influenced by the judgmental society. Social media worsens it by controlling each and every action and choices that we make in our life. This tends to make a person mentally and physically disturbed leading to harsh realities like suicide. Mr. Mishra also shared some of his experiences regarding the torments faced by the youngsters. He also said that it was our responsibility to realize and react on the different stages of life and shouldn’t be controlled by external forces; preaching one should always follow one’s own heart. Adding to this, he talked of Gandhian principles and how reading has helped him to grow into a better person.
Principal Dr. Anushree Lokur briefed about the whole program. For details visit click here.
