Q: Which are the programs offered by the College under Arts faculty?

A: The College offers only one program BA (Aided) with various subject combinations available elsewhere on this website. The BA (Self- financed) program is available only for Communication & Media. T Y BA (Psychology) is also a self-financed program.

Q:  Are the Subject combinations we filled in the University pre-admission registration form different from what we are getting in the College form?

A: Yes. The College offers only certain subject combinations (given in the College form) while the University form gives all the subject combinations given by all colleges put together. So please refer to only Ruia College form for admission to Ruia College. 

Q: How is the curriculum in BA at Ramnarain Ruia Autonomous College different from the one offered by other colleges affiliated to University of Mumbai?

A: The Ramnarain Ruia Autonomous College, being an autonomous College, has its own Board of Studies in various core subjects from the Arts faculty. The BoS has a representation from all stakeholders and that BoS designs the curriculum in a particular core subject. This curriculum is further passed by the Academic Council and Management Board (taking into consideration the regulations by the Examination Board) and then it gets implemented.

Q: Is it compulsory to give four preferences?

A: Yes, the final allotment of the core subjects-combination will be made on the basis of merit and availability of seats in a particular core subjects-combination.

Q: What is CSK?

A: CSK is Communication Skills in English. It is a compulsory subject to be studied by every FY Arts faculty student as part of the mandate to provide communication skills to all students. 

Q: What is meant by OEG, OSS, OHN, OMR, OFR?

A: These are abbreviations/ short- forms used for the subjects of various languages- literature offered at Ramnarain Ruia College. OEG means Optional English, OSS means Optional Sanskrit, OHN means Optional Hindi, OMR means Optional Marathi and OFR means Optional French. So, when a student offers OMR, he/she will study Marathi literature.

 Q: Then how is Compulsory Marathi different from Optional Marathi?

A: Compulsory Marathi/ Hindi/ Sanskrit/ French is to be studied by every FY Arts faculty student as a compulsory language skills-training course. While under Optional Marathi/ Hindi/ Sanskrit/ French/ English, a student studies literature (fiction- non-fiction etc.) of a particular language.

Q: What is FC?

A: FC is the Foundation Course. It is required to be studied by every FY Arts and Science faculty student.

Q: Can a student opt for three languages-literature as core subjects?

A: No, a student cannot opt for three languages-literature as core subjects.

Q: Can a student opt for French literature or French compulsory language even if the student has not studied French in 11th and 12th std.?

A:  No, a student cannot opt for French literature if the student has not studied French in 11th and 12th std. since the FY French syllabus presumes a prerequisite of certain level of knowledge in the subject. But a student can opt for French compulsory language if he/ she has studied French in school. 

Q: Can a student opt for French literature or French compulsory language even if the student has not studied French in 11th and 12th std., but has studied French in school?

A: A student can opt for French compulsory language if he/she has studied French in school. But he/ she cannot opt for French literature if the student has not studied French in 11th and 12th std. since the FY French syllabus presumes a prerequisite of certain level of knowledge in the subject.

Q: If a student has not studied a language subject at Junior college, can he/ she get any other subject instead of compulsory language?

A: Even if a student has not studied a language subject at Junior college, Compulsory Marathi/ Hindi/ Sanskrit/ French as well as CSK is to be studied by every FY Arts faculty student as a compulsory language skills-training course. 

Q: Can a student with HSC in Science opt for Psychology as a core subject?

A: A student with HSC in Science can opt for Psychology as a core subject only if the student has done Biology and has secured 70+ marks in Biology.

Q: Can a student with Psychology not studied at HSC opt for Psychology as a core subject?

A: No, a student with Psychology not studied at HSC cannot opt for Psychology as a core subject

Q: What is ‘Commerce’ subject under the Arts faculty program? 

A: ‘Commerce’ subject as an option for Arts students was introduced by University of Mumbai to widen the career prospects of the students from Arts stream. The subject of Commerce enhances the knowledge related to Business Management, Marketing Management, Human Resource Management, Banking, Insurance, Financial and Stock Markets, Advertising, Retail Management and other allied fields. Accordingly, a student can take three courses of Commerce and three courses of Economics respectively for their BA degree. 

Q: Does the core subject Commerce include Accounting or Mathematics? 

A:  No. Commerce subject covers theory papers only and does not include Accounts, or Mathematics or statistics to make it an easier option for students.

Q: Can a student change the subject combination afterwards?

A: No, a student cannot change the subject combination afterwards.

Q: Can a student change the subject combination at SYBA?

A: The core subjects-combinations offered at FYBA cannot be changed at the SYBA. the subject selected at TYBA will have to be from these subjects-combinations of FYBA. 

Q: What is Philosophy? Is it difficult?

A: Study of Philosophy consists of Moral Philosophy, Ethics, Indian and Western Philosophy, Philosophy of Religion, Yoga Philosophy, Logic etc. This course helps in critical thinking, learning to argue consistently and is known to be the queen of all sciences. Efforts are taken to simplify the subject and good study material is provided. 

Q: Can a student study BA with Mathematics or he/ she has to do BSc in Mathematics?

A: A student can study BA with Mathematics like he/ she can do BSc in Mathematics.

Q: Can a student pay the fees in instalments? How many instalments are allowed?

A: Yes, a student can pay the fees in two instalments with the permission of authorities.

Q: If a student cancels the admission, does he/ she get a refund? How much will be refunded?

A: If a student cancels the admission, it takes a minimum of a month to get a refund. The amount of refund is according to the University of Mumbai rules. 

Q: If a student cancels the admission, when does he/ she get the documents back?

A: Yes, if a student cancels the admission, he/ she gets the documents back generally in 2-3 days.

Q: What are the College timings? When do the lectures start and end?

A: The first lecture for the Arts faculty subjects starts at 7:45 am and the last lecture depends on subjects offered. But all Arts faculty lectures end by 2.30 pm. 

Q: How can a student opt for the subject Economics while pursuing a degree program in Science faculty?

A: A student can opt for a combination of subjects like Economics-Statistics-Mathematics at only the FYBSc level. The subject does not appear in selection at the second year science degree program.

Q: What are the specializations offered at TYBA?

A: A student can acquire BA Entire i.e. six courses in a core subject or BA double major in two core subjects. For details, please refer to the College prospectus. 

Q: Are all specializations offered to both English as well as Marathi Medium

     students?

Q: Who awards the degree of BA?

A: The Ramnarain Ruia Autonomous College, being an autonomous College, awards the degree of BA. But the degree certificate also mentions the name and logo of University of Mumbai since the College falls under the jurisdiction of University of Mumbai. 

Q: Where will I get the detailed syllabus taught in all subjects in Arts faculty?

Communication and Media

 

 

 

Q: What is this course about?

A: This is a three year undergraduate program that aims to create advanced understanding among students the various mass media options in India.

The course is essentially about the many media of communication used by the masses, such as newspapers, magazines, cinema films, radio, television, etc. that aims at imparting detailed knowledge about the various fields of advertising, communication, and public relations.

The course is spread over six semesters, providing training to the students in the form of lessons, assignments, project work, seminar, workshops, field visits and internships.

Anyone who possesses a keen awareness of media laws, creativity and spontaneity, good communication and interpersonal skills can pursue this course in the field of mass media.

In the nutshell, the course revolves around having good communication skills and a creative approach of looking at things. Good observation skills are always welcomed while pursuing the course.

 

Q: Why choose this course?

A: Careers in mass media are not only high paying but also bring in a great deal of job satisfaction and expression of creativity to the candidates. This degree opens doors to students for a range of careers in TV, publishing, public relations, journalism, editing, direction, filmmaking, scriptwriting, production, etc.

A: The course requires candidates to pass 12th class (10+2) or equivalent in any stream.

 

Q: Can Commerce and Science students do the course?

A: Yes, students from any background have the option to take up this course as their bachelor's degree if they find the course is of their interest.

 

Q: Is there any entrance test to secure admission in Ramanarain Ruia Autonomous College?

A: No. There is no entrance test for eligibility. The only criterion is 10+2 certificate of any recognized authority.

 

Q: Being an autonomous college, which institution’s degree is awarded to graduates?

A: Although Ramnarain Ruia Autonomous College is autonomous, the final degree is awarded by University of Mumbai.

 

Q: Is the course offered by your college a part time or a full time course?

A: The course offered by our institution is a 3 years full time Bachelor’s degree course.

 

Q: What Specializations does Ramnarain Ruia Autonomous College offer in this course?

A: The subjects for Semester I, II, III & IV are same for everyone. In Third Year though, the course offers two specializations – Advertising and Journalism. The students are free to choose either while processing their admission for Third Year.

 

Q: Is any internship compulsory during the course?

A: No.  There’s no requirement of any compulsory internship during any semester. However, the students are encouraged to do a short internship on a voluntary basis during their vacations for the overall development of their academics and better future prospects.

A: There are many mass media's in the present world and it is very necessary as the whole world count on news that these mass media's share. So there'll be a lot of job requirements in this field which will provide a lot of job recruitments for media graduates.

A: Yes, the college offers various certificate courses for students which they can take as an additional course along with this degree.

BSc

 

 

Q: Which are the programs offered by the College under Science faculty?

A: The College offers BSc (Aided) with various subject combinations of pure sciences and B. Sc (Self-Financed) in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Computer Science along with a Five-year integrated program in Bioanalytical Sciences.

 

Q:  Why are some of the Subject combinations I filled in the University pre-admission registration for FYBSc aided courses, not seen in the College form?

A: The College offers only certain subject combinations (given in the College form) while the University form gives all the subject combinations offered by all colleges under the University. You need not worry about this disparity as long as you have enrolled at the University for the aided program.

A: Courses that are self-financed are run without government aid. Therefore, the fee

structure for these courses is higher.

 

Q: Do I have to fill separate forms for aided and self-financed courses?

A: Yes, you will have to fill separate forms. A separate merit list will be put up for aided

and every self-financed course.

 

Q: What is meant by a stand-alone course?

A: A stand-alone course is conducted entirely by the respective department. There are

no subject combinations offered in a stand-alone course and the student majors in

that subject only at the final year of B.Sc.

 

Q: Is Biochemistry a stand-alone course?

A: No B.Sc. Biochemistry is a self-financed course wherein student is offered Chemistry

Botany and Biochemistry at first year, Chemistry, Biochemistry in second year and

has to major in Biochemistry at third year.

 

Q: Will I be able to change my subject combination after admission?

A: No. Once admitted subject combinations cannot be changed, unless decided by

the authorities

 

Q: Will I be able to major in any subject of the three opted at FYBSc?

A: Yes, you can. However, only certain combinations are offered at the SYBSc level.

Also, number of seats are limited for certain subjects like Statistics, Microbiology

and Life Sciences. Admission to these specific programs is therefore allocated

according to merit.

 

Q: Can I pay the fees in instalments? How many instalments are allowed?

A: Yes, you can pay the fees in two instalments with the permission of authorities.

 

Q: Can I get a refund of my fees on cancellation of admission?

A: Yes. However, the amount refunded depends on when the admission is cancelled. Refund policy of the College is according to that suggested by the University of Mumbai. Also note that it takes a minimum of a month to get a refund.

 

Q: If a student cancels the admission, when does he/ she get the documents back?

A: Yes, if a student cancels the admission, he/ she gets the documents back generally in 2-3 days.

 

Q: Can I get my original documents back on cancelling my admission?

A: Yes, you can get your original documents back within 2 working days of cancellation of admission.

 

Q: Can I get my originals back without cancelling my admission?

A: No. We can give you a Retention certificate that states that your originals are with us, and that you will get your originals back only after cancellation of admission.

 

Q: What is the difference between Life Science and Microbiology?

A: Life Science encompasses everything under Biological Sciences which includes all branches of science that focus on  living organisms. The branches of Life Science are Genetics,Immunology, Developmental Biology, Neurobiology,Genetic Engineering, Fernentation Technology, Biotechnology,Bioinformatics, Biochemistry ,Ecology, and Environmental Biology. Microbiology is a scientific study of microorganisms- bacteria, viruses, algae, fungi and protozoa, including their genetics, physiology and biochemistry. It includes the study of microbial processes including their explorations in biotechnology. It also encompasses the study of disease- causing microbes and also the application of microbes in industry and for solving environmental issues. 

 

Q. Can I take a biological Science subject even if I have not opted for Biology at junior College?

A. No, unless you have appeared for Biology at XII, you cannot opt for either Botany, Zoology or Microbiology at FYBSc.

 

Q. What are the College timings for B. Sc?

The theory classes for FYBSc begin at around 10.30 am and end at around 3.00 pm, depending on the subject combination. However, depending on which practical batch you are allotted, you might have to come before lectures, for the morning batch of practicals at 7.45 am or wait after lectures till 5.30 pm if allotted the afternoon batch of practicals.

 

Q. What is CBGS?

CBSGS is Credit Based Semester Grading System adopted by the University of Mumbai. It is a semester based curricular system that is allocates credits to the student on completing courses offered by the institution. The scores obtained in the courses all through the UG program are converted to a Cumulative grade point average (CGPA) that is an indication of the academic achievements of the student.

 

 

 BIOANALYTICAL SCIENCES

 


 

Q: What courses does the department offer?

A: The department offers two courses:

  1. Integrated M.Sc. in Bioanalytical Sciences. (5 Years after 12th Std)
  2. MSc. in Bioanalytical Sciences (After graduation/ T.Y.B.Sc.)

 

Q: What are the eligibility criteria for the Integrated M.Sc. course?

A: There is no entrance test for integrated M.Sc. course, the admission will be done on the basis of 12th std. marks. 

 

Q: What are the eligibility criteria for the two-year M.Sc. course?

A: There will be an entrance test for MSc. Bioanalytical Sciences. The Students

graduated from Biotechnology, Microbiology, Life Sciences, Botany, Zoology,

Biochemistry and who had opted chemistry till S.Y.B.Sc. level can apply. 

 

Q: What subject combination does the course offer?

A: The course comprises of Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences and

Computational Sciences (Basic Physics, Basic Mathematics, Introductory

Statistics, Bioinformatics)

 

Q: Is the student eligible to apply if mathematics was not taken up as a subject at HSC level?

A: Students not having mathematics at HSC level can apply too for the integrated MSc. course, however for eligibility, the student has to qualify the bridge course offered by the college along with the regular curriculum.

A: The course offers specialization in Bioanalysis, Bioinformatics &Nutraceuticals in the

final year of Post Graduation.

 

Q: Can students undergo any internship programs during the course tenure?

A: Yes. We encourage students to take up internships/Summer training after SYBSc  

level to enhance their research skills. However, there is a compulsory 3 months  

internship program after MSc I.

Q: How often the syllabus is upgraded?

A: The syllabus is upgraded every year depending on the current industrial trend and

requirements. The inputs regarding the syllabus upgradation are suggested by industrial

experts from various sectors. 

 

Q: Are there any industrial/ educational visits organized by the department?

A: The department organizes industry/research institute visits every year from TYBSc. Level.

 

Q: What is the schedule for the Regular Lectures/Practicals?

A: This is a full time course. FYBSc will have the schedule from 12:15 to 6:00pm. SYBSc   

     &TYBSc will have the schedule from 7:45am to 1:55pm. MSc schedule is from 9am to  

     5pm. Also this schedule is subject to change as per the availability of the Visiting  

     faculty from Industries and also specialized labs availability slots for topics like    

     Computational sciences.

 

Q: What is the examination pattern?

A: Semester End examinations are carried out having two semesters per year. Theory &

Practical papers are of 60marks also an Internal component for every paper is evaluated

for 40 marks each. Also regular evaluation in the form of various activities, active

participation by the students is also carried out.

 

Q: Does the department provide placements after MSc?

A: Yes, we provide placement opportunities for students depending upon their area of

interest and evaluation of their efforts throughout the course.

 

Q: Are there any textbooks that are offered by the course? 

A: This is Challenging yet interdisciplinary course. Hence rather than   textbooks Faculty      

members allotted for the topic gives reference books in order to imbibe library referencing

quality in students.

 

BIOCHEMISTRY

 

 

 

 Q: What are the eligibility criteria for admission to B.Sc. Biochemistry?

A: The candidate should have passed 12th standard from recognized boards and should

have studied Biology & Mathematics in 11th& 12th standard. Admission will be based on

rules & regulations of the admitting authorities & purely on merit ONLY.

 

 Q: What is the subject code for Biochemistry?

A: The subject code for Biochemistry is RUSBCH at under graduation& RPSBCH at postgraduation

 

Q: What will be the subject combination for the three years of Under-Graduate in Biochemistry?

A: For F.Y.B.Sc. = Biochemistry + Chemistry + Botany + Foundation course 1

For S.Y.B.Sc. = Biochemistry + Chemistry + Foundation course 2

For T.Y.B.Sc. = Biochemistry + Applied component (student gets a chance to select any

one of the applied component subject)

 

Q: What is the difference between 3 units or 6 units Biochemistry? What is offered at Ramnarain Ruia Autonomous College?

A: 3 units students are offered Biochemistry only at T.Y.B.Sc., while 6 units students are

offered Biochemistry from F.Y.B.Sc. where they learn the subject right from its basics. At

Ramnarain Ruia Autonomous College, we offer 6 units Biochemistry.

 

Q: What are the different topics studied under the subject Biochemistry?

A: The student enrolled gets a chance to learn the basic chemistry of biomolecules, plant

biochemistry, membrane biochemistry, nutrition, biostatistics, human anatomy, human physiology, immunology, genetics, molecular biology, metabolism of biomolecules to name a few. You can view the detailed syllabus on the college website.

 

Q: What are the future prospects after graduating in 6 units Biochemistry?

A: The student can continue his/her studies in M.Sc. Biochemistry, Molecular biology,

Virology, Oceanography, Biophysics, Nutrition & Dietetics and many more subjects. The students can pursue further studies in M.B.A. of different streams. If required the candidate can study PGD in different subjects. The student can also opt to work in pharmaceutical companies, food industries, pathology laboratories etc.

 

 

BIOTECHNOLOGY 

 

 


Q: What is the scope of the Course?

A: The student Graduating in Biotechnology can pursue a career in further studies like

M.Sc. In Biotechnology from India & Abroad, M.B.A from India & Abroad, Diploma in Intellectual property rights, Diploma in Clinical Research, MS in Biology, Though the students might get a job as a Medical representative, as quality control and quality assurance chemist however higher studies are recommended.Post Graduate students have opportunities in Pharma industry, Data analysis or clinical research industries, academia, food industry, Research Institutes, R&D departments of different industries

 

Q: Is there any entrance examination for admission?

A: As of yet the admission is on merit basis for both UG and PG courses. Nevertheless, if there is any change with respect to this it will inform in advance to students.

 

 

Q: What is the scope for research at the Undergraduate and Postgraduate level?

A: We encourage students to undertake short term projects from the first year itself for UG as well as PG students. Skill-based project is a part of the curriculum in the last semester of the UG course while PG students undergo a 3-month dissertation project.

 

Q: How are parents informed about the progress of the student?

A: Parents can visit the Department, meet or contact any of the faculty members for the same. We also conduct parent-teacher meetings every year for the third-year students to inform parents about the progress of the student as well as to plan the future career path after graduating from college. 

 

Q: Does the Department offer placements?

A: The College has a placement cell that undertakes various activities to enhance the chances of the student getting placed in a reputed company in a good position. Apart from this, the department informs and keeps the students updated about the placement’s opportunities at various industries/research institutes, even after the student has passed out from the college.

 

Q: Is Mathematics in 12th grade compulsory for the admission in Biotechnology program?

A: Yes. Mathematics is essential for the admission in Biotechnology course at the FYBSC level. Although the students who opted for other subjects instead of Mathematics at 12th standard can still apply and complete a bridge course in Mathematics conducted by the college, appear for the examination conducted based on the bridge course conducted and clear it. Failing to do so the students' enrolment in the University will not take place, thus jeopardizing the students' appearance for the Third year’s examination.

 

Q: Which marks are considered for the admission PCB or aggregate?

A: The students' total percentage scored is taken into consideration for admission in the course of Biotechnology 

 

 

COMPUTER SCIENCE

 

 

 

Q: When do the admission for FYB.Sc. Computer Science starts?

A: Usually after the H.S.C. results are declared. College puts an admission notification on its website.

 

Q: Can I get admission to SYB.Sc. / TYB.Sc. Computer Science if I am a student of

     some other college.

A: Yes. You will get the admission provided you do not have any backlog/ATKT in your college.

 

Q: Does Ruia College have B.Sc. Information Technology Program?

A: No. Ruia College has B.Sc. Computer Science, M.Sc. Computer Science & M.Sc. Information Technology Program.

 

Q: I have done my Diploma. Can I get direct admission to SYB.Sc. Computer Science?

A: You need to check for validity from the University of Mumbai.

Q: What are the fees for FYB.Sc. / SYB.Sc. / TYB.Sc. Computer Science?

A: During admissions college displays all the details along with the merit list.

 

Q: Do I need to have computer or programming knowledge before joining the course?

A: No. It is absolutely fine if you do not have any computer or programming knowledge. As we have framed the syllabus in such a way that even if do not have any prior knowledge you will learn.

Q: Do you have campus placements?

A: Yes, we do have campus placements. We also send our students to other colleges for pool campus placements.

Q: Do you have internships in B.Sc. Computer Science program?

A: We do not have internships in our curriculum but we encourage our students to take up internships during their summer/winter vacations.

 

Q: If I am from another state/country can I get admission to B.Sc. Computer

     Science Program?

A: Yes. You need to submit all the required documents as prescribed by the admissions authority during admissions. If you are found eligible then only you will get the admission.

Q: If I as a parent want to know the progress of my child how do I approach?

A: Parents can always visit the Department of Computer Science & IT and meet the Head of the Department with prior appointment. Or you can send an email to [email protected]

 

Q: Does the department organize Educational visits?

A: Yes. We do organize Educational Visits every year. We take our students to various organizations/institutes for visits. We have visited Wipro, Infosys, ISRO, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Meteorology Department in Pune and Sikkim to name a few.

Q: What all activities does the department organize for the upliftment of students?

A: Our department organizes seminars/workshops/trainings, Intercollegiate IT Festival TechStorm, we also encourage our students to participate in various Competitions organized by other colleges.

Q: If I wish to cancel the admission in between can I cancel?

A: Yes. You can cancel your admission after completing all the formalities laid down by the academic section in the college office.

A: The course is recognized by UGC, affiliated to the University of Mumbai. B. Voc, Green House Management is equivalent to any other graduate courses and these students are eligible to appear for any competitive Government examinations.

A: If a student wishes to leave the course after one year of studies, he gets a diploma, after second year he gets advance diploma and one completion of third year gets a degree- Bachelor in Vocation, Green House Management. Later if he chooses to take admission to the next level, he can do so on the basis of his diploma/advance diploma certificate as the case may be.

A: Industry partner helps us identify the skill gap, suggest the appropriate skill required for a student to be employable. Hence help in modifying the curriculum. Industry partners also help us with internships and campus placement of the students.

A: The minimum eligibility for these courses is H.S.C/12th Pass from Science, Commerce or Arts background. There is no age bar for taking the course which will provide life-long learning opportunities for all those who desire to take advantage of the program.

A: The candidate has to fill in the University application form (available on University of Mumbai website) and select FY B.VOC Tourism and Travel Management and select college as – Ramnarain Ruia College (Matunga). Similarly, candidate also needs to fill in online college admission form available on Ramnarain Ruia Autonomous College website. Both the forms are to be saved and a hard copy of both the forms is mandatory at the time of admission and once the merit list is being put up. Q: What is Pharma Analytical Sciences (PAS)?

A: Pharma Analytical Sciences is the branch of applied science that deals with the analysis of medicines (or medicinal drugs or simply therapeutic drugs) in various stages. In a broad sense, Pharmaceutical analysis is very essential to check quality and safety of drugs both as bulk drug substances and as pharmaceutical products (formulations). Analysts take part in many of the studies that constitute this documentation. Quality and its specifications are based on substance analysis, and that knowledge is later used for quality control during full-scale production with respect to national and international pharmacopeial standards.
