Educational Visits
Field Visits
The Department organizes several field visits throughout the year to important local historical and cultural sites. A visit was organized to students of Third Year and Second Year to Kanheri Caves in Mumbai as a part of their papers on Archaeology and Ancient India, respectively. Several student-led projects were conducted by the Department. For a project on Modern Maharashtra, students have undertaken research-based documentary-making on different historical places and localities - for example, Crawford market, maidans of Mumbai, Cinema theatres of Mumbai, etc. As a part of the Heritage Tourism in Mumbai paper, students have also made short-form audio-visual content to highlight the cultural heritage of different localities of Mumbai to promote their tourism. The Department of History has launched an initiative called 'Durgmitra' in 2023-24 to encourage awareness about fort conservation. Under this initiative, a field visit to the Raigad Fort in December 2023 was organized.
Museum/Archives Visit
Museum and archive visits are an integral method of the Department for engaging students with historical materials and artefacts first hand. As a part of the course paper titled ‘Museology, Archival Science and Library Science’, Third Year students are also encouraged to visit museums, libraries and archives in Mumbai and engage with the Curator, Archivist, Librarians, Conservationists to understand the roles and functioning of these institutions. For the academic year 2023-24, visits have been organized to the National Museum of Indian Cinema, Nehru Centre and Museum, Godrej Archives, Deccan College - Archaeology Museum and the Maratha History Museum in Pune. Such museum and archive visits encourage critical thinking, curiosity, and a greater understanding of the complexities and nuances of history.
Study Tour/ Industrial Visits
The Department of History organizes a Study Tour/Industrial Visit with students every year to significant historical sites and landmarks across the country. The aim is to provide immersive learning experiences, allowing students to engage directly with the locations where historical events took place. It also encourages students to experience and observe the rich culture, history, and geography of the region, and explore and appreciate the art, music, dance, and traditions of the regions. Over the years, the study tour has been organized to Bijapur-Pattadakal-Hampi-Aihole in Karnataka, Jhansi-Gwalior-Orchha-Datia in Madhya Pradesh, etc. In 2023-24, the study tour was organized to Rajasthan- starting from Chittorgarh and covering Udaipur, Kumbhalgarh and Haldighati. The students were taken on a guided tour of monuments, forts, museums, battlefields, and other culturally and historically important sites.
