Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is Microbiology?
Ans.

Microbiology is the study of microorganisms like bacteria, viruses, fungi, algae and protozoa. It involves the study of these using culturing techniques apart from the use of magnifying devices like the microscope. Other than the core areas like Microbial cytology, genetics, biochemistry, physiology, this science also deals with the significance of microbes and their explorations for the benefit to humankind. There is a common misconception that microbes are germs and therefore always harmful. Although there are microbes that cause disease, epidemics and pandemics, and their pathogenesis, treatment and prevention are studied by a Microbiologist, there are a large section of them that are harmless and a significant number of them can also be explored for benefiting humankind. A microbiologist also learns their use in industrial production of pharmaceutical products, food and dairy products, biofertilizers and also environmentally significant products and processes, either as wild type strains or as genetically modified overproducers.

Q. What are the career prospects? What can a BSc / MSc do after graduation?
Ans.

Students completing a UG program are skilled enough to join the production industry or testing labs as technicians. Students completing PG program can join research institutes as Research Assistant, or join professional organisations/ industry as

  • Quality Control/ Assurance Technologist
  • Microbiologist for analysis of Food/ water/ industrial products or environmental processes
  • Sales or Technical Representative
  • Clinical and Veterinary Microbiologist
  • Clinical Research Associate
Q. What is the scope of Microbiology?
Ans.

Microbiology plays an important role in the field of Science, Genetic Engineering, Food and Environmental Biotechnology, Agriculture, and Human Medicine and in the society at large. As a result, the field of Microbiology has unlimited potential and the need for qualified microbiologists continues to grow, both for basic research and practical applications. The research sector inextricably values the input poured by microbiologists in different specialisations from all around the world. From laboratories to industries, and even in the teaching sector, the number of experts in microbiology is demanding and essential for the whole system to keep operating in unison. All around the globe, there is an increasing urgency for understanding microbes and answering the challenging questions related to them, where the role of a microbiologist comes into play.

Q. What is the eligibility criteria for applying for BSc in Microbiology ?
Ans.

Applicants should have completed 10+2 or its equivalent from a recognized board in Science with Biology as one of the papers.

Q. What is the eligibility criteria for applying for MSc in Microbiology?
Ans.

Applicant should have completed BSc in Microbiology (Three units or Six units) from a recognized university. Admission is provided on the basis of the admission policy of the College.

Q. Do we provide assistance for placements?
Ans.

The institution has a very active placement cell where the students can enrol themselves. The cell guides them about how to write and develop their CV and prepare themselves for the corporate world. Several professional organisations connect to the department faculty, for recruitment of freshers. The Department takes initiative to conduct tests and interviews for such organisations or recommends students to them. The fourth semester in the MSc program has an internship component. We do facilitate internships during PG courses in research institutes, Industries, diagnostic centres etc. Such experience also sometimes materialises into a job offer

Q. Do we offer M.Sc by research/ PhD program?
Ans. Yes. The department has two recognized faculty, Dr. Anushree Lokur (recognized for MSc by research and for PhD in Microbiology) and Dr. Varsha Shukla (recognized for MSc by research). Students are admitted to these programs according to admission policies of the College. Students intending to enrol for these programs should have a basic research aptitude and perseverance and motivation to pursue research
