Activities of the Department
I) Industrial visits:Keeping in mind the saying “Seeing is believing” we at the Department of Biotechnology not only strengthen the student’s bookish knowledge but also take them to different industries and research institutes enabling them to have a direct dialogue with the expertise. Goa, Hyderabad, Mohali, Nainital, Jaipur, Delhi, Bangalore are the different places we have taken our students in the past. Few of the institutes that we visited are as follows: CCMB, Wheat Research Institute, National Institute of Oceanography, IISER Mohali.
II) Intercollegiate annual Festival:Along with industrial visits we also have our annual festival “CHIMERA'' which follows the rule of “of the students, by the students, for the students” giving students a platform where they can also explore their managerial skills. An intercollegiate festival that gives students an opportunity to mingle with the students across the city. learn the subjects through different creative competitions. Every year around 300 students from different colleges participate in the festival. Since 2017 we associate an NGO or organization which works for the betterment of the underprivileged sector of the society. The trifling amount that we raise through the event we donate it to these organizations. Divya Vidyalay, Vanashkati, The wishing factory are the organizations we have been associated till now. And we wish to continue and contribute in any way we can to society.III) Workshops/ seminars/Trainings/Poster presentation competition:The Department believes in all round development of the students therefore we conduct workshops/ seminars/ hands on training on diverse subjects. E.g. molecular biology, Animal tissue culture techniques, Nanotechnology involving experts from national & international repute. Following are a few of them. 1. ‘Expasy’ Bioinformatics workshop For students and educators 2011 2. ‘Current Trends in Food Biotechnology’ one day seminar, 2017 3. ‘Nano-and Biotechnology: Innovation and Revolution" workshop for UG, PG students and educators in association with Harrisburg University, USA in July 2017 and May 20184. ‘Workshop on Modern Approaches for detection of Biological Agents’ In association with Indiana University of Pennsylvania, for UG, PG students January 2019 5. ‘Three-day workshop on Basic techniques in Animal Tissue culture’ For UG students, April 2018 and 2019.Ms. Supriya Kale has also led 3 groups of students from various biological sciences departments of the college for a month-long training program conducted by Indiana University of Pennsylvania, USA “Summer exploration Program in Biotechnology” from May 2017 to May till date.
