BioTechnology

About Us

By definition at its simplest, Biotechnology is technology based on biology - biotechnology harnesses cellular and biomolecular processes to develop technologies and products that help improve our lives and the health of our planet. Biotechnology has become an integral part of our lives and holds vast potential for the future. Recognizing the need of the hour, the Department of Biotechnology of Ramnarain Ruia Autonomous College was established in the year 2002. It was one of the pioneer departments of Biotechnology in the University of Mumbai. Began with Bachelors in Biotechnology course it also started Masters in Biotechnology in the year 2007 and PhD in Biotechnology in the year 2009The Department has well-equipped Undergraduate and Postgraduate laboratories, a furbished library with over 1000 books catering to the needs of the course objectives. The course includes high in demand topics like Immunology, Cell Biology, Industrial Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics etc. Since the year of inception, the Department has seen increased demand of the course and the faculties always toil to meet the ever-growing expectations. All our hard work has paid off as many of our alumni are doing very well in their respective fields in India and abroad.

Established in the year 2002, The Department of Biotechnology at Ramnarain Ruia College stands strong completing 20 years of astounding success. With apex popularity within Mumbai University and beyond, the Department stands proud with several academic and co-curricular achievements of students including University toppers, excelling research/ industry performers and rising entrepreneurs too! The Department strives hard to achieve these goals with the help of its dynamic faculty; a dedicated Departmental library with more than 1000 freely accessible books, dedicated bioinformatics lab, air conditioned, advantageously furnished laboratories, dedicated areas for animal, plant tissue culture and of course ever supporting non teaching and technical staff. While the Department not only boasts of its academic achievements, it also equally focuses on the overall grooming of the student’s persona and their social outreach. They are constantly kept updated about the current trends in applied sciences and associated careers through trending seminars, conferences, guest lectures and workshops held round the year. Since inculcating research aptitude has been a regular practice, students are constantly pursued to take up internships in India as well as abroad. Under DBT’s “Star Scheme”, the Department has been recently encouraged for projects which are on-going or in pipeline. We look forward to many more glorious years with even more achievements and growing stronger alumni.

Activities of the Department

I) Industrial visits:Keeping in mind the saying “Seeing is believing” we at the Department of Biotechnology not only strengthen the student’s bookish knowledge but also take them to different industries and research institutes enabling them to have a direct dialogue with the expertise. Goa, Hyderabad, Mohali, Nainital, Jaipur, Delhi, Bangalore are the different places we have taken our students in the past. Few of the institutes that we visited are as follows: CCMB, Wheat Research Institute, National Institute of Oceanography, IISER Mohali.
II) Intercollegiate annual Festival:Along with industrial visits we also have our annual festival “CHIMERA'' which follows the rule of “of the students, by the students, for the students” giving students a platform where they can also explore their managerial skills. An intercollegiate festival that gives students an opportunity to mingle with the students across the city. learn the subjects through different creative competitions. Every year around 300 students from different colleges participate in the festival. Since 2017 we associate an NGO or organization which works for the betterment of the underprivileged sector of the society. The trifling amount that we raise through the event we donate it to these organizations. Divya Vidyalay, Vanashkati, The wishing factory are the organizations we have been associated till now. And we wish to continue and contribute in any way we can to society.III)  Workshops/ seminars/Trainings/Poster presentation competition:The Department believes in all round development of the students therefore we conduct workshops/ seminars/ hands on training on diverse subjects.  E.g. molecular biology, Animal tissue culture techniques, Nanotechnology involving experts from national & international repute. Following are a few of them. 1. ‘Expasy’ Bioinformatics workshop For students and educators 2011 2. ‘Current Trends in Food Biotechnology’ one day seminar, 2017 3. ‘Nano-and Biotechnology: Innovation and Revolution" workshop for UG, PG students and educators in association with Harrisburg University, USA in July 2017 and May 20184. ‘Workshop on Modern Approaches for detection of Biological Agents’ In association with Indiana University of Pennsylvania, for UG, PG students January 2019 5. ‘Three-day workshop on Basic techniques in Animal Tissue culture’ For UG students, April 2018 and 2019.Ms. Supriya Kale has also led 3 groups of students from various biological sciences departments of the college for a month-long training program conducted by Indiana University of Pennsylvania, USA “Summer exploration Program in Biotechnology” from May 2017 to May till date.
