About Us

Physics department of Ramnarain Ruia Autonomous College came into existence in 1937 in the year of college establishment. Department has achieved several milestones and produced a galaxy of eminent personalities like Dr. Kasturi Rangan, Ex-ISRO Chief and planning commission , Dr. Ajit Kembhavi Director , IUCAA , Dr. S. B. Patel , Ex. Head and professor at CBS Centre, Dr. Vaibhav Prabhu Desai, Scientist at TIFR and many more.

In the recent times, we started research activity with the Ph.D. centre with present sanctioned capacity of 6 Ph.D. students. Currently the Department has 2 research guides. Department has received grants from the funding agencies like DBT, DST, UGC and CSIR.

Department Features

Physics department is one amongst the six departments of Ramnarain Ruia Autonomous college who have been awarded STAR DEPARTMENT STATUS, on the successfully completion of three years of star college scheme. Our faculty members have done exemplary research work, have successfully completed various projects funded by UGC and University of Mumbai.

Since last ten years, department organize the annual festival “INFINITY” wherein Principles and concepts of Physics are demonstrated with the working models, designed by the students under the guidance of teachers. Students and teacher from other colleges do visit “INFINITY” festival and appreciate the effort of the department faculty and students. Every year response of the visitor is over whelming.

Under the “BRAHMAND” An amateur astronomy club, department organises lectures by inviting eminent personality, experts from the field of astronomy and cosmology. Some other activities under this banner include telescope handling workshop, Night Sky observation and fabrication of the reflecting type telescope.

Department make use of the technological aids in teaching and learning using the several new facilities provided by the college management. These include ICT enabled smart classroom and laboratory. Internet access is available to all our UG and PG students in the Reading Hall as well as in the college campus through WI-FI network.

To encourage Research culture, College has In-house facility at ‘Dr. Ramanathan Advanced Instrumentation Centre’, equipped with sophisticated instruments such as FTIR, UV, HPLC, HPLTC, Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy, GC, GCMS and differential scanning Calorimetry. It has been used by Physics students for the characterization of the material sample synthesized during the research activity.

Activities of the Department

The Department of Physics successfully conducted two webinars on 29th May, 2020 titled, “Anderson Localization Random Lasers” and the other on 18th May, 2020 titled, “Synthesis and Evolution of Third Generation Solar Cells”. There were around 80 to 100 participants in each of them. The department was very proud to host Dr. Sushil Mujumdar, Nano-optics and Mesoscopic Optics Laboratory, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai and Dr. Archana Kalekar, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai as the eminent speakers for the webinars.

Annual Project Exhibition  ‘INFINITY’

On 2nd and 3rd Jan, 2020 the Department of Physics organized its annual festival-project exhibition INFINITY,  where projects designed- constructed by students most of them are working models with guidance from the department faculty are showcased. These projects are exhibited in the laboratory, where the students demonstrate, explain the working to the  Teachers, students, as well as visitors with non science background from Ruia College as well as from nearby colleges and schools This festival enhances the student’s interest in the subject.
