Economics

The Department of Economics was established in 1938 as a part of the History and Economics Department. It was in 1947 that History and Economics were separated and each became an independent department. Prof. G. D Parikh became the first head of the independent Department of Economics and in Prof. Parikh the Department found an excellent teacher with imaginative and effective administrative competence. With his illustrious colleagues in the Department- Prof. Mrs. C. K Dalaya, Dr. B. G. Kunte and Prof. Ram Joshi (who later took on to become the Vice- Chancellor of Bombay University), Prof. Parikh started to take the Department to be one most sought- after Department in the subject in city of Mumbai.

The faculty members of the Department believe in overall development of the students and encourage them to participate in research seminars, skill- based workshops and other extra and co-curricular activities. The Department trains students to develop analytical thinking and to understand local, national and global economic issues and hence, it organizes their interaction with experts from various walks of socio-economic-political life. The Department also organizes annual study tour and industrial visits to varied economics activities across India. The Department along with Forum of Free Enterprise organizes the A. D. Shroff Memorial elocution competition every year and the winner at the College level represents the College at the final round of the competition at the state level.

Message from Head of Department

“It is rather the activities of the College other than examinations, the amenities of life afforded here on a miniature scale that train students for the discipline and battle of life that lies ahead. This training is a matter of sound habits, of the spirit of teamwork you imbibe here, of development of character in short, which is embedded in right principles and is yet tolerant of others to the same extent that it claims liberty for itself.”

- Dr. V. N. Chandavarkar, Vice- Chancellor, Bombay University (At the inauguration of Ramnarain Ruia College)

These inspiring words by Dr. Chandavarkar have driven the vision-mission statements of the College for the past more than 80 years and they still do so for the Department of Economics.

The Department of Economics, one of the largest departments in the subject in the city of Mumbai has been paving its way in the new millennium through its weaknesses and challenges with this mission for the past 80 years and it is my foremost priority to convert these challenges into opportunities in the years to come. Therefore, we, at the Department, are focussing our attention to delivery of trans-disciplinary curriculum, internationalising learning at the Department- both at UG and PG level and creating a new identity as a research- oriented Department fostering global competencies among the learners in their employment as well as shaping the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship in them.
