Annual Report 2022- 2023

 

Year 2022-23 was special as College resumed all the activities fully in offline mode. It was heartening to see the campus abuzz with students again and to witness student’s enthusiastic participation in all College events. Faculty and students accomplished a lot during this academic year.    
College started a Master's program in Clinical Psychology during the last academic year and two new MA programs from the next academic year are planned.

1. M.A. in Politics with International Relations & Area Studies.

2. M.A. in Philosophy with Philosophical Counselling & Logic Based Therapy.

College organised a 2-day International Conference on "Millets 2023": A Transdisciplinary Approach to its Resurgence and Sustainability (ICM-2023) in January. 289 participants attended from all over India and abroad. Millet Man of India and Padma Shree Awardee Dr Khadar Valli was the keynote speaker at the conference. The Higher and Technical education minister of Maharashtra, Hon’ble. Chandrakant Dada Patil was present at the inaugural ceremony and he appreciated Ruia’s efforts in this direction.

The conference was an occasion, when every department in the College, across all faculties, participated and contributed to the event. With “Millets 2023”, Ruia College has proven that it is ready for undertaking transdisciplinary teaching and training programs envisaged in NEP 2020.

Ruia College was put on the world map as an educational partner for the World Skill Council Competition in Floristry held in Helsinki Finland in October, 2022.

The Department of Marathi organised an International Conference in collaboration with the International University at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 25th July, 2022. The theme for the conference was “The Impact of Dr Ambedkar's Thoughts on the Contemporary Cultural, Social and Literary Scenarios in Asia”. Dr. Leena Kedare, Shilpa Neve and Dr Vikki Gaikwad also presented papers at the conference.

College along with UGC-HRDC organized an Online Refresher Course in Environmental Chemistry between 12th and 24th December 2022. It was coordinated by Prof. Manish Hate and Dr. Vaibhav Wagh.

College hosted the 55th Youth festival for South Zone on behalf of University of Mumbai.

The annual event of Chiplunkar Vyakhyanmala was successfully organised by the Department of Marathi. It was the 49th year of Vyakhyanmala. This year Dr. Kashinath Deodhar spoke on ‘आत्मनिर्भय भारत आणि संरक्षणसिद्धता’ while Dr. Sunandan Lele spoke on ‘भारताची क्रीडा क्षेत्रातील भरारी’. Both the talks were very well received by the audience.

Marathi Vangmaya Mandal was felicitated with a special award by Maharashtra Times on the occasion of “Marathi Rajyabhasha Din '' for its contribution to Marathi language since its inception. 

The N.S.S. unit of Ruia College, was felicitated by Times of India and Maharashtra Environmental Ministry for Beach Cleaning Activity under SWACHH BHARAT ABHIYAN

A one-day state Level seminar entitled " महाकाव्य महोत्सव " was organised by the Department of Sanskrit. The Department of Philosophy conducted 8-week program for the students of SPM English School, Pune on “Philosophy for Children”

As the College's commitment to Sustainable Development Goals, Ruia College IQAC conducted Green audit, Environment audit and Energy audit of the campus. IQAC also conducted various training programs for Faculty development and skill training for non- teaching staff.

Dr Kanchan Chitnis, Dr Vikki Gayakavad and Dr Swati Deshmukh along with two students attended a 5-day प्रज्ञा परिसर प्रकल्प at the Pune University, conducted by Maharashtra State Faculty Development Academy and Institute of Psychological Health and they continue to train more members of our faculty as Pradnya Catalysts for developing Emotional Friendly Campus.

The Science Association of Junior College, conducted an innovative programme, BRAINIACS where all FYJC Science students participated, while the Arts Association of Junior College conducted their annual festival, ‘Enriching Minds’ with a lot of fervour.

Jr College Political Science Department organised a seminar, ‘International Community’s Approach towards Maintenance of Global Peace and Security.

Under Ruia’s Social Responsibility, students organised various activities like blood donation drives, beach cleaning, tree plantation activities etc. NSS, NCC, RSC & SDG Committee Volunteers participated in these activities.

Students and staff conducted the annual college festivals like Samanvaya, Utsav, Aarohan, Anubhuti etc with a lot of enthusiasm. Innovative programs like Lavanya showcasing Indian cultural diversity were performed under Azadi ka Amrut Mohotsav.

 

Many of our faculty members excelled in their spheres of activities by making notable contributions.

·   Dr. Vaishali Dabke from Dept of Sanskrit successfully completed her M. A. in Indology with second rank from Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth, Pune.

·   Dr. Arjun Kharat from the Department of English, published a book entitled “Dalit Aesthetics in Namdeo Dhasal’s Poetry”.

·   Dr. Vikki Gayakavad published his article in the Political Weekly

·   Dr. Mayuri Rege, Mr. Sachin Rajagopalan and Ms. Mugdha Belwalkar have been awarded an Outreach Grant from India Bioscience which focuses on giving hands-on biology lab experience to school students belonging to economically weak backgrounds.

·       Mr. Sachin Rajagopalan has been nominated under the Open Education for Better World program of United Nations. Under this program, he has designed a course on awareness for Antimicrobial Resistance. He will be presenting this course at a symposium to be held in Slovenia in June 2023.

·       Eight faculty members, Dr Nitin Potdar, Sachin Rajagopalan, Shveta Tiwari, Dr. Mayuri Rege, Dr. Gargi Rane, Anjali Mali, Omkar Ramdasi and Devendra Chavan were trained as Master trainers for Maharashtra State Development of Educators and Enhancement In Delivery,(MSDEED) program.

·       Five faculty members, Mr. Niranjan Chavan, Mr. Sachin Rajagopalan, Dr. Gargi Rane, Dr. Swati Deshmukh & Anjali Mali have been selected for the Resource generation camp for National Biology Olympiad, at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education.

·       Aditya Jadhav from Dept. of Philosophy received full scholarship from the University of Washington USA for a 11 week online intensive training program in “Philosophy for Children”.

·       Dr. Sasikumar Menon was invited as an expert and Mentor for the contingent of University of Mumbai at the National Research Convention, Anveshan 2022 held at Ganpat University, Mehsana, Gujarat. He was felicitated by the Vice Chancellor of Mumbai University after the Contingent won three gold and one silver medal including the best overall research project.

 

Many of our students brought laurels to the College, with their commendable performance at various events during the year;

·       3 our students, representing Mumbai University, secured 1st prize at the Indradhanush-Inter University State Level Quiz Competition.

·       4 students secured 1st Rank in Elocution Group B (Hindi & English) Competition at the final round of the 55th Youth Festival 22-23.

·       NCC Golden Senior Under Officer, Aaryan Deolekar was awarded the prestigious Raksha Mantri Commendation Card for the year 2022.

·       Shravani Mhaisale from TYBA Economics won the first prize in an essay competition held by the International Institute of Population Sciences in July 2022.

·       Students from Sanskrit dept have successfully catalogued 267 manuscripts. They are also involved in the Annotation of Ramayana Project jointly with Bhandarkar Oriental Institute and IIT Kanpur.

·   Ms Tanvi Kadam secured a Gold Medal, for the second consecutive year, in Indian Classical Dance at the 55th Youth Festival organised by the University of Mumbai. She was also awarded the Dr. Rajrajeshwari Pillai Award, for the best Bharatanatyam Dancer.

·       Ms Rutuja Shinde was selected to perform at the finale of India's International Groove Fest (IIGF) 2022 in Pattaya, Thailand

Ruia College participated in almost all sports events and qualified for almost all inter-zonal level competitions organised by University of Mumbai. May it be individual events such as Taekwondo, Boxing, Chess, swimming, judo, rhythmic gymnast or group events like Basketball, Football, cricket, Kabaddi, kho-kho or shooting championship. Our students have been a part of University of Mumbai’s winning teams for many of these sports.

Some of our alumni also made us proud with their achievements:

·       Ms Shruti Kanitkar from the Sanskrit batch of TYBA 2017 was awarded Sahitya Academy Yuva Puraskar 2022 for the composition of Sanskrit Mahakavya titled “Shreemati Charitram”. 

·       Mr Yogesh Kolte of the 1995 Economics batch has been recognized as the Advocate of Records by the Supreme Court of India.

·       Mayuri Dhumal, from the department of Marathi of 2016-17 batch was selected for the prestigious fellowship in Data Value Advocacy program of United Nation Foundation. She is one of the 7 fellows who were selected for this fellowship program among 400 applications from all over the world. She is the only Asian to be selected for the fellowship.

It was indeed another year of accolades and laurels being bestowed on the institution by the exemplary performances of students, faculty, and alumni.

College is supported by alumni and many other well-wishers.

·   By offering scholarships to the economically weak students as well as seed money for the Research Projects.

·   Mr. Ramakant Gupte for his generous donation for development of Computational Facility for the Department of Statistics & Mathematics in memory of his Late wife Prof. Vandana Ramakant Gupte who was a Ruia alumnus.

·   Mrs Karandikar & family for donating laptop, printer and some instruments for Self Vision Centre in memory of late Shri Vikram Karandikar, who was a faculty at the physics department of Junior College.

College is thankful to management S. P. Mandali, Pune for their continued proactive support. It is due to their support that a lot of modifications carried out in our infrastructure have been possible.  

The next academic year will be an important milestone with proposed implementation of the New Education Policy 2020. College will definitely face several challenges initially, but the depth of preparedness and planning will help College to take these challenges within our strides.
