Bioanalytical

Ramnarain Ruia Autonomous College has been at the forefront in envisaging innovative courses, designed to bridge the gap between academia and Industry.  Ramnarain Ruia College was the first college in the country to establish the highly pragmatic M.Sc. Bioanalytical Sciences in 2004 under the Innovative Courses of University Grants Commission to develop trained professionals in the field of Bioanalysis. Looking at the success and popularity of the MSc course, the college initiated an Integrated M.Sc. Degree course in Bioanalytical Sciences (Five years- BSc and MSc) in the year 2010. Both the courses are well received by industry as well as students.

The Prime objective of these courses is to develop independent learners and trained professionals in the field of biological analysis by giving hands-on training and conducting research. These interdisciplinary courses provide an opportunity to young minds to explore recent trends in scientific research such as Bioprospecting, product development for food, nutraceutical & herbal industry, exploration of Ayurveda with an analytical and bioanalytical approach, standardization of ASU drugs, diagnostics, bioavailability & bioequivalence studies, computational biology using the state of art infrastructure available with the department.

Department has three upgraded laboratories which are specially designed considering the interdisciplinary nature of Bioanalytical Sciences. These labs are well equipped with sophisticated Analytical Instruments such as High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (Shimadzu), Gas Chromatography (Shimadzu), UV-Visible Spectrophotometer (Shimadzu Pharmaspec UV1700) and Biorad Isoelectric Focussing Cell and Protean Cell. The department has also developed the pilot tablet making and testing facility for the students to gain the first-hand knowledge of GMP, GLP & Quality Control. The department encourages students to participate in research projects and helps hone their research aptitude. Recently three students of the department filed a patent application for Preparation of Biodegradable Sanitary Napkins under the guidance of Dr. Sachin Palekar.

The Department is actively involved in interdisciplinary research which involves collaborative research with other departments of College. This includes research at undergraduate level as well as post graduate level. Faculty members of the departments strive to inculcate research temperament and to enhance the scientific communication skills, soft skills for accomplishing the trained professionals.

Mission

  • Develop trained Bioanalysts that are proficient in cGMP and GLP standards.

  • Conduct basic research that involves experiential learning and skill development.

  • Cultivate an interdisciplinary scientific approach in students.

  • Inculcate entrepreneurship skills in students by creating a strong support system for young entrepreneurs.

  • Induce strong work ethics and high moral values contributing to overall personal growth of students.

Best Practices

  • Young & Dynamic core faculty representing different streams of Science.

  • Hands on training on sophisticated analytical instruments is provided to students even at the undergraduate level.

  • Microscaling is practised wherever possible in the experiments.

  • Research is practised at undergraduate level with Indoctrinate interpretations of various problems and recently a patent is filed for a research project carried out by our students..

  • Experiential Learning is always encouraged along with a comparative approach of concepts in practicals/lectures.

  • Learning Objectives and Learning Outcomes are discussed in lectures and practicals.

  • Varied teaching methods are practised like POGIL, Flip the classroom, Group discussion, webinars, ‘By the students,  for the students’, etc

  • Alumni also teach a few topics apart from syllabus.

  • We encourage the students to explore online research content and update them with current trends in the pharmaceutical industry and related fields.

Activities of the Department

Bioanalyze is an annual department festival comprising co-curricular competitions such as poster-making, eco-Rangoli, scientific housie, etc. It provides a platform for students to showcase their talent and creativity.

Industrial Visits are conducted with the objective of introducing students to advances in newer technologies. Some of our earlier visits include IIT-Indore, IISC-Bangalore, Themis Medicare- Haridwar, and Sun Pharmaceuticals-Vadodara.

Activities called “For the Students by the Students” include: Presentation of summer internships and research surveys by T.Y.B.Sc. class and Laboratory Tour for F.Y.B.Sc. students arranged by senior students.

Message from Head of Department

The Department of Bioanalytical Sciences at Ruia College has been a fountain head of research and teaching activities aimed at multidisciplinary understanding of modern biology. Bioanalysis is a growing and dynamic field that applies sophisticated analytical instrumentation for analysis of complex biomatrices. This includes analysis of pharmaceutical drugs, their preclinical and clinical studies, Ayurveda Siddha Unani Drugs, their standardization using modern phytochemistry approach and modern Biology.Considering the interdisciplinary scope of Bioanalytical Sciences, the department conducts research in core areas Diagnostics, Bioavailability/Bioequivalence (BA/BE) studies, Phytochemistry, & Biomaterials. The department has identified these areas with the objective of effectively using its expertise and instrumentation and training students on application of bioanalytical sciences to solve pertinent scientific problems.Trained professionals in the aforementioned  core areas such as diagnostics and molecular Biology are pressing need of an hour in the present pandemic situation. Training students in development and validation of bioanalytical methods with safe handling of clinical samples certainly contributes towards the skilled manpower for industry. The department also strives for stimulating Independent Learners for Interdisciplinary Research. In conformity with the institutional vision, experiential learning in scientific research helps to stimulate young minds to become independent learners having an ability to think out of the box. The department is also committed towards developing Entrepreneurship skills amongst young minds of ruia for national Asset Development.
