The Subject of Biochemistry started in the year 1999 and the Department of Biochemistry was established in the year 2004. It’s the oldest center offering single major Biochemistry (6 Units) at the Under-Graduation and Post-Graduation level. The Department has been offering a Certificate Course in Food Science and Quality Control since past 15 years.Our Strengths, like the five elements of nature are -

The discipline of Biochemistry serves as a torch light to trace the intricate complexities of Biology, besides unraveling the chemical mysteries of life. Biochemistry finds its applications in the disciplines of genetics, molecular biology, immunology, medicine, health & wellness, food science & technology, nutrition & dietetics, pharmaceutical, clinical research, research & development, veterinary, agriculture, bio-engineering and biotechnology. 

The Department has always been encouraging research culture from the under-graduation level as a co-curricular activity. Our students and staff members have published their research work in renowned National and International Research Journals.

Activities of the Department

The department organizes annual signature festival ‘Appetisers’. In Appetisers, 10 to 12 food based themes are given to students in groups. Students from all classes (FYBSc to MSc II) are placed in one group. On the day of Appetisers, Students explain charts and working models made by them to give an insight into their themes. They serve delicious and nutritious recipes prepared by them, present them and explain its health benefits. Fun games are also arranged. Eminent personalities are invited as the Chief Guest for the event to motivate students and present real life examples in front of them. Parents, Teacher colleagues and students from other departments attend the event. Students not only enjoy this activity very much but also it helps them learn many life skills such as developing Teamwork and Collaborations, Enhancing Social and Emotional Learning, Improving Risk Analysis and troubleshooting, Entrepreneurship etc.

Message from Head of Department

The department of Biochemistry is a big family where all my staff members, alumni, students and their parents are integral part of it. Since all teachers teach all classes, teacher: student ratio is appropriate and personal attention to individual student is possible. Depending upon the situation, we have always tried to play different roles in our student’s life like friends, guide, mentor and sometimes, even parents. We have always focused on the overall development of the students. The department has always been exemplary with its academic results and I can proudly say that our students have good Emotional quotient and Social quotient which is very important in today’s world.
