The Department of History is one of the oldest department of the Ruia College. Established in 1937 the department offers courses at the undergraduate level. It is first department from the art faculty to offer programme in Ph. D. Apart from textbooks departmental library has rich collection of reference books. The department also has extensive collection of maps, dvd's, c.d.'s, journals etc. The department has rich tradition of research activities and encourage students to make presentations at various conferences and to undertake research projects.

 
FACULTY

The Department of History is currently headed by Dr. Mohsina Mukadam.  Her areas of research are history of Food history, history of Mumbai and history  of Konkani Muslim community of Western India. She has presented papers at various International, National and State seminars. Her papers have been published in National journals. She was recipient of Principal Ponkshe Cash Prize for Best Research Paper presented at seminar on Dietetics in Ancient India organized by Institute of Oriental Studies, Thane. She was awarded first prize for best paper presented at Dr. Mani Kamerker Memorial Seminar on “Folklore as a Source of History.” She has been awarded  Fellowship from  UGC, University of Mumbai and Asiatic Society of Mumbai. She writes regular columns on culinary history in Marathi newspapers and magazines. 



Louiza Rodrigues is a lecturer in the department of History since 1988.She has been a visiting faculty to several institutes such as BMM, Ruia College, National Institute of Fashion Technology, Mumbai University, International Baccalaureate Jamnabai Narsee School, Higher Secondary and Wellingkar Institute of Management, Development and Research, BBA, International Programme.She has designed a syllabus for this programme : ‘Third World History’ She has presented papers at the National Seminars on Environmental History of Western India and Goan Christian community of Bombay. Her papers have been published in reputed National and International Journals on Environmental History and the pioneering political organization of Western India, the Bombay Association. She has registered for Ph. D on Forest Conservancy of Western India in the Nineteenth Century from the Mumbai University She has been awarded fellowships from Mumbai University , Asiatic, and FIP from the UGC to pursue her doctoral research. 


Pradeep Waghmare stood first in Arts faculty in HSC examination in N.K.T.T. College. He topped T.Y.B.A. examination from Thane. He was adjudged as best student and best sportsperson of Joshi Bedekar College. He has represented State at National level karate competition. He had attended National and International seminars and conferences. He has presented papers at student teacher seminar at University of Mumbai. His areas of research are ancient India and archaeology.

ASSOCIATION

RAJATARANGINI

History Association was establised in 1994 . Following programmes are organised annually.

MUDRA :   Since 2011 as a part of platinum jubilee celebrations department strated its signature festival Mudra. It is an inter and intra college festival which includes various competitions like essay writing, ppt, photography quiz etc.

PROF.D.D.KOSAMBI MEMORIAL LECTURE:    Instituted in the academic year 2007 -08 to celebrate birth centenary of Prof .D.D.Kosambi, a renowned scholar. This memorial lecture has been delievered by distinguished scholars like Prof. Romila Thaper, Dr. D.N.Jha. Dr. Umesh Bagade, Dr. K.N. Panniker, Dr. Gopal Guru, Dr. Venkatesh Atreya and Dr. Amar Farooqui. This lecture is oragnised in the month of January.   

WORKSHOPS/ CERTIFICATE COURSES:   Department conducts subjectrelated workshops and certificated courses. Following workshops were conducted.

1.  Introduction to Numismatics Studies(2010)

2. Non - Verbal Communication through Fourteen Century Temple Architecture(2011)

3 Heritage of Mumbai ( Since 2011) ( Basic)

VISITS AND STUDY TOURS:  Students accompanied by teachers visit different museums and places of historical imporatance in and around Mumbai. Every year in the month of November a study tour to historical places  is organised.

LECTURES BY EMINENT SCHOLARS:   To introduce students to recents trends in research in history lectures by scholars are organised.
