Brief Description of Department

The Department of French of Ramnarain Ruia Autonomous College, Mumbai was founded in 1937 by Prof V.G. Hatalkar and is currently the only department in Mumbai offering a BA in French. Our department offers an interdisciplinary program which aims towards a specialization in French in six units. Dr. Vasumathi Badrinathan was the former Head till 2015 and currently she is the head of the department at Mumbai University. She has been invited speaker in various countries. She has also been awarded a FullBright scholarship in 2015. At present, the department is headed by Varsha Deshpande.

We have revised our syllabus under autonomy in such a manner that it is now more contemporary and job oriented. We have tried to maintain an equal balance between literary as well as professional French knowledge. We have initiated research based activities through assignments and projects.

The First year program (FYBA) enables a student to acquaint with learning basic communicational skills, writing, listening and reading skills. The student also learns to translate literary as well as non literary texts from English-French and vice-versa.

In the Second Year (SYBA) students’ are taught to analyze short stories and poems from different countries and literary movements. The SYBA program equally focuses on Professional French skills that equip students with knowledge of Professional French. It enhances and develops vocabulary and structure related to professional French. It gives an overall understanding on how to communicate and converse in a professional environment

The Third and the final year of BA French program encompass 6 papers of French. It offers two literary and four non-literary papers. The goal of the program is to enable the learner to speak fluently B2 level of French at the end of the third year through flipped classroom, discussion, debates, movie screenings, guest lectures and festivals. They will also learn to express their ideas in a coherent and precise way making them independent.

Our teaching methodology under autonomy consists of a learner centric approach which coincides with the Common European Framework for Languages. We have an inclusive approach where teacher acts facilitator making our classroom more dynamic and enjoyable.

The department helps students develop a holistic approach by constantly motivating them and giving an intercultural experience. We have achieved this through task based activities such as role-play, games, films and so on. We encourage self-learning and collaborative learning in our classrooms. We make optimum use of technology in our classroom through internet based activities.

Our subject board comprises of eminent experts from the industries like Capgemini and Accenture. The board members have helped us initiate skill-based approach in the syllabus for example, one of our current papers consists of professional French where we train our students to work in an intercultural professional environment.

The department has also offered internships to students in the French Embassy in India. Every semester the department conducts remedial classes for the students to improve their grammar and speaking skills and to boost their confidence.
